Mmmm! I have been thinking the same. Maybe you drew inspiration from one of Nats nappies?

Did have a brighter version with cleaner layout but that was for v1.0, doubt it is compatible with v2.

Now, with HTML::Template... tongue

I am down with getting rid of this template...   and WTF is with the Camel again?

One thing we should do is keep it as a theme...  but not the main one...

depressing is right...  makes you want to...  go to another website!!! :)

Do you have any use for the fixed theme I created for the "other site"? Its w3 compatible and very close to the v.2 (actually... just before replacing table with div id= and tr/td with Ted's li...).

How far off from a working 2.x are we?

would be a better use of resources to start working on a simple clean 2.x theme if the timeline wont be as long as my pecker wink

The theme on the other site is very close to the 2v.

before I say any more about the color or appearance thing, I've recently installed "the other version" from .org on my laptop. (Windows 2000 with Abyss Web Server).

There were some conflicts with the "\" or "/" windows/unix incompatabilities in the directory structure after installation but all in all, it was up and running without much trouble. But what I wanted to say is:

Compared with the version here, it was slow, even with the server running on the same computer... In my experience otherwise, testing programs with a server running on the same computer (instead of across the internet) is normally very fast (pages load instantly) However the pages loaded with a considerable and consistent sluggishness. Not really sure why at this point.

There were also some features "missing" that I had already gotten used to after playing around with this version for the week or so I had it installed. And, it seemed much faster - even across the internet.

But when I opened up the admin area of the other version - wow, what a pleasure. Not necessarily any better or much different functionality wise, but just so beautiful.

So on the appearance issue.

yes, the camel hair brown theme doesn't exactly make me retch (upchuck, barf, vomit, hurl, ralph, purge, puke, spew, regurgitate, throw up, lose my lunch, toss a sidewalk pizza, tango with the toilet, have a technicolor yawn, pray to the porcelain god, etc - [Urban dictionary])

...at least not until one gets a look at the dazzling array of Theme choices one has elsewhere.

I get the impression that HERE you have the mechanics under the hood putting together a high performance engine, but for a car that looks like it belongs in a  demolition derby.

I really wish you and the .org people could patch things up and work together again.

What one version lacks the other would or could make up for and then some (and vice versa).

Too much to hope for I suppose at this point, but its an observation.

I've looked around and there don't really seem to be many, or any alternative Perl based (GPL) CMS's out there.

From a user perspective, it would be nice to have the best of both worlds, if it were possible to think along the lines of cooperation rather than competition for a while.

P.S.

When I made reference to the "other" version in my post, upon hitting [send message] the text was changed to ".spin off (insecure version)".

Thought I would just mention how much that sort of s**it pisses me off.

I edited it out and put "other" to avoid having words/opinions put in my mouth.

I realize that at one time "they" were guilty of the same practice but have since discontinued doing so. Some mention was made about it there in some old post.

If, as mentioned in a certain IM message, there is any intention of ever being friends again, I would think refraining from such nonsense might be the first order of business - along, perhaps with doing something about all the other insulting and slanderous statements to be found here directed at the "competition". It all seems very distasteful, unnecessary and counter productive to me.

It is horrible! I don't like this form of censorship either. A while back, for a laugh the
forum used to make the following changes...

Windoze = Windows
Monopolysoft = Microsoft

I switched to Linux about three years ago but have recently had to re-install Windows
on my PC at home but this was due to work commitments.

It is about time that this was dropped.

There was once a concept of changing the colors through a web admin interface. I think
it was JFK who put together the first prototype for WebAPP. It was called "getcols" I
think. Basically you pick a color and it updates the CSS. It was very underrated. I
always thought it would be a good implementation. I would like to see it work by
clicking directly on an area of the webpage and picking a different color. Maybe a
little AJAX twist is just what it needs.

@TomBooth
A couple of things really. Firstly, I hate the Admin interface! I always have done! I know a lot of work went into it but I think that a very important step was missed in its' development...

Design First - Code Second

...Even now, I struggle to find most settings and some are in the weirdest of places! The text based interface, while not as pretty was easier to navigate and you could get to things, often in fewer clicks!

Second, the .net version is much faster and indeed, there is a mean engine under the bonnet, unfortunately, it looks like it fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down! It is a little restrictive and a little muddled in its' coding. It is probably because of the last few strands of legacy code and I have always pushed for a complete re-write. This has always been rejected for being too time consuming though there is a thread of irony here somewhere!

@Ted
Oh dear! If this was an optional extra I would be happy to go along with this idea, if not, then I would object to this very strongly.

The problem we have with the current codebase and theme structure is that there are too many hard coded links between the two. If this Admin interface is built into the code for the theme itself, then that is fine, however, putting yet another section into the already crowded Admin interface would be a disaster.

For the sake of fairness, I need to make a correction in regard to a statement I made earlier.

I stated above that upon loading and reloading that "other version" after a recent installation on my laptop that it seemed slow, but I didn't know exactly why. I had assume it was something in the coding.

In actual fact, the next day when I got to playing around with it again the speed was noticeably improved. So much so that I was rather astounded and perplexed.

Then I realized that the reason I had installed it was to test out the themes.

The first thing I did after installation was to open the themes and start making changes. I was playing around with the tabs, modifying the colors and such and had three different image editing programs open as well as several different browsers to see how things looked. One of the image programs in particular is something of a memory hog.

On top of that, the reason I was reloading the page was to switch themes, so it was not just a matter of loading the page but loading an entirely new theme, which I would imagine takes a little longer.

Given all of the above factors, I believe the problem was, besides the theme loading, that I don't have enough memory on this computer and with all those programs open it was resorting to using virtual memory.

As I can't actually install this (.net) version on windows (or can I ?) or test the theme changing, It could not really be considered a fair comparison.

Basically, I was a little anxious to balance out my criticisms by pointing out the plus points as well, but sorry to say, it seems I was jumping to conclusions. If there is indeed a speed difference, it doesn't appear, as far as I can tell, to be something anyone could time on a stop watch.

The next day, without all those programs open and without loading any new themes - the pages loaded as fast as anything else does on this computer.
